THE ART OF MEMORY

Night Sea Journey

&

Spontaneous Generation

Revisited

Pittenweem Arts Festival.       Fife.

The art of memory; a system or method of memorising where striking or emotionally charged images are imagined in a place; a room, a house or theatre. The images, associated with specific meaning, can be recalled by visualising and revisiting the imagined place in one’s imagination, hence a memory system or memory theatre.

This selection of work returns to some of the themes I have explored over the years, in bodies of work such as: The Recovery of Dissolved Substances; Revenges of Nature; Flammable Solid Flammable Liquid; A Chamber of the Moon; Of Nature’s Obvious Laws and Processes in Vegetation; As above So Below; Blood of the Pelican.

In this exhibition I have deliberately made connections between the individual pieces but I can now also see unintended connections. The notes below the titles are intended as background information and can be used to interpret or find meaning in the works or equally, can be ignored.
